Майкл МакАрдл, возглавивший женскую сборную Северной Ирландии в марте, считает, что его команда способна сотворить историю и пробиться на чемпионат мира. Он сравнил этот путь с «киносценарием» и подчеркнул, что сделал команду готовой к плей-офф. Северная Ирландия в первом раунде плей-офф отбора на чемпионат мира 2027 года встретится с Португалией.
До прихода в женский футбол МакАрдл семь с половиной лет работал в строительной отрасли, параллельно играя в полупрофессиональный футбол, получая степень в области инженерных систем зданий и воспитывая троих маленьких детей. Оставшиеся доходы он вкладывал в получение тренерских лицензий. В итоге он пошёл на серьёзный риск и решился на «вероятно, 300-процентное падение зарплаты», чтобы полностью посвятить себя тренерской работе — решение, которое теперь может привести его к чемпионату мира в Бразилии следующим летом в качестве наставника женской сборной Северной Ирландии.
После работы в «Фалкирке», «Сент-Миррене» и «Айр Юнайтед», а также с молодёжной командой Шотландии (до 23 лет) и должности главы элитного женского футбола в Шотландской футбольной ассоциации, он был назначен в Северную Ирландию в марте. Начав свою работу с двух побед подряд над Мальтой в апреле, он помог команде обеспечить место в стыковых матчах за выход на чемпионат мира 2027 года. В пятницу команда МакАрдла принимает Португалию на стадионе «Инвер Парк» в первом матче первого раунда плей-офф. Он говорит, что его карьерный опыт до сих пор был направлен на этот «особенный момент» с Северной Ирландией.46-летний МакАрдл и его жена Тэмми оба родились, выросли и никогда не покидали деревню Мудисберн в Северном Ланаркшире недалеко от Глазго. «Моя жена теперь социальный работник в деревне, заботится о стариках, которые нас вырастили — мы всегда происходили из семей, которые отдают другим, и я думаю, что тренерская работа легко с этим сочетается, потому что в конечном счёте это и есть суть тренерства», — говорит МакАрдл в интервью Moving the Goalposts. «Я лидер-слуга. Мне очень комфортно, будучи опытным тренером, быть уязвимым и открытым. Этот стиль лидерства, я хотел убедиться, что игроки [Северной Ирландии] знают об этом сразу же». Теперь МакАрдл, обладатель лицензии УЕФА Pro, находился под влиянием просмотра видео бывшего тренера «Милана» и сборной Италии Арриго Сакки, который проводил тренировки по схеме 4-4-2. МакАрдл считает, что с Северной Ирландией нужен более гибкий подход, поэтому его команда использовала различные тактические схемы в первых четырёх матчах под его руководством: апрельские победы над Мальтой и узкие поражения 1:2 от Швейцарии и Турции в июне. «Я сознательно не выбирал одну строгую схему или стиль. Для такой страны, как наша, с точки зрения населения, мы 150-я нация в мире, а находимся на 50-м месте [в рейтинге ФИФА среди женских сборных], потому что мы бьём выше веса из-за страсти к спорту», — сказал МакАрдл. «Мы могли бы легко сесть в оборону и попытаться пройти дальше с наибольшим количеством очков в Лиге B, но мы хотим быть смелыми и амбициозными». «Чтобы сделать этот шаг вперёд, иногда нужно сделать шаг назад и получить несколько ударов», — добавил он. Northern Ireland finished third in their qualifying group, which included Switzerland, Turkey and Malta, and now face Portugal over two legs in the first round of the play-offs, with the winner advancing to a two-legged play-off final in November for a place at the finals in Brazil. McArdle says he has made his team “play-off ready” since taking over in March, with the squad having worked on a variety of tactical shapes and set plays in the build-up to the first leg. “We’ve got a clear identity of how we want to play,” he says. “We’ve got a clear identity of what we want to do with the ball and without the ball. We’ve been working on that since March. We’re as ready as we can be. We’re in a good place.” The first leg is at Inver Park, Larne, on Friday, with the second leg in Portugal on 27 October. The winners will face either Belgium or Romania in the second round of the play-offs. Northern Ireland have never qualified for a World Cup and have not played in a major tournament since Euro 2022, when they became the first senior Northern Ireland team – men’s or women’s – to reach a European Championship finals. McArdle says the team are “play-off ready” and that reaching a World Cup would be “a special moment in time” for the country. “It would be like a movie script, to be honest with you,” he says. “We’ve got to be ready for that and we are ready for that. We’ve made sure that we’ve prepared them for that, to be play-off ready.” He adds: “To take that step up, sometimes you need to take a step backwards and take a few hits as well. We’ve had a few hits along the way in the last few months, but we’ve learned a lot from them and we’re in a good place.” Northern Ireland’s preparations have been hit by the withdrawal of the Leicester City midfielder Chloe Castree through injury, while the Liverpool defender Rachel Duggan is suspended for the first leg. McArdle says he is “not sure” whether he will have the services of the midfielder Chloe McCarron, who has been struggling with a knee injury, but says the squad is otherwise in good shape. “We’ve got a really good squad, a really strong squad, and we’re really confident in the group that we’ve got,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of depth in the squad now, which is great to see.”McArdle says he has been preparing for the play-offs since his appointment in March, and has made his team “play-off ready”. “We’ve been planning for this moment for the last seven months,” he says. “We’ve had a lot of time to prepare, we’ve had a lot of time to look at Portugal, we’ve had a lot of time to look at ourselves, and we’re in a really good place. The players are in a really good place, they’re confident, they’re in a good moment in their careers. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s a special moment in time for the group and for the country, and we want to make the most of it.” Northern Ireland’s preparations have been hit by the absence of the injured captain Marissa Callaghan, while the Leicester City midfielder Chloe Peasgood is also out. McArdle has called up uncapped duo Hannah Keryakos and Hannah McCord for the first time, while there is a return for the Liverpool midfielder Rachel Furness, who has not played for her country since March 2023. Furness, 34, is the second-highest scorer in Northern Ireland’s history with 40 goals in 113 games and has been in fine form for Liverpool this season. “I’m delighted to have Rachel back in the squad. She’s a fantastic player and a fantastic person. She’s got a wealth of experience and I think she’s a great addition to the squad,” McArdle says. “She’s a leader in the group and she’s a great person to have around. We’re really looking forward to having her back involved and hopefully she can add value to the squad over the next period of time.” Northern Ireland are ranked 50th in the world, with Portugal 27th. The second leg is in Póvoa de Varzim on Tuesday. The winners face either Belgium or Romania in the second round of the play-offs, with the final round scheduled for November. The two European play-off winners will advance to the World Cup in Brazil next summer. McArdle says his side will need to be “at our best” to beat Portugal, but he believes his team can pull off a surprise. “It’s like a movie script, really, isn’t it? If you wrote it, you couldn’t write it any better,” he says. “I’m really excited about it. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a special moment in time for Northern Ireland and for the players and for the staff and for the country as a whole. We’re going to have to be at our best to get a result against Portugal, but we believe we can do that. We’ve got a real belief in the group that we can do something special here.”```json {
